Does James Gatsby have access to far more nefarious tools and means than Jay Gatsby? Absolutely, and does open him up to far more dangerous threats, but their intentions are identical, so the methods they use to reach their goals don't necessarily make one better or worse, in my opinion. I compare and contrast the two based on ambition and could argue that James needed unparalleled amounts of it to become a 21st-century Gatsby. the proliferation of social media accounts, personalities, and influencers aside, Jay Gatsby's advantage was his whiteness, as opposed to James Gatsby, who had racial biases working against him every step of the way. Race is a very important aspect of my retelling of this story, and in some obvious ways and some less obvious, James had to contend with a far more complex landscape than what Jay was up against. I also think that the term "dangerous" is a loaded word in the context of my Gatsby. Is James Gatsby more dangerous than Jay Gatsby because of his methods? GATSBY deals with social media addiction and the other dangers of online activities. It wasn't until I knew that a 21st-century Jay Gatsby could not only exist in the digital age but could thrive better than his 20th-century counterpart that I decided to develop and write my version. I think the ladder has a completely new context since the advent of the internet and social media. ![]() The two that stuck out for me are the American Dream and reinventing the self. ![]() I was a latecomer to reading this classic, which is partly why I was instantly impressed with how relevant some of Fitzgerald's themes remain to be. What do you feel still connects the story of Gatsby with audiences almost a century later?
